Lessons for Kids & Teens (Ages 5 and up)
Learning to play the piano is more than just figuring out how to read notes on a page and coordinate 10 fingers (though coordinating those 10 fingers, 2 hands, and eventually 2 feet is a good brain workout in itself!). Your child will also learn music theory, develop aural awareness, and begin to internalize rhythm and meter -- all skills that can be transferred to other instruments later on. Although I expect my students to work hard and try their best, I like to keep lessons light-hearted and fun. For older kids and teenagers, I provide age-appropriate material, so they don't feel like they are being treated like little kids. And once they have mastered the basics of reading and playing music, I ask them to provide their input on the songs we work on during lessons. You can find more information on my teaching approach in the FAQ section.
Lessons for Preschoolers (Ages 4-5)
Some younger children are very enthusiastic to start piano lessons, though they may not be ready for "traditional" lessons. For these children, I use a piano method specifically designed for young kids. It incorporates a variety of activities to keep them engaged: coloring, flashcards, storytelling, and even two little stuffed pals to keep them company at the piano during their lessons. All they need is to be able to recognize letters A-G and numbers 1-5. It is very important at this age, however, that they are at least somewhat interested in the piano or music. Generally I recommend starting these lessons at 20 minutes, and if they are really enjoying it, we can extend to 30 minutes whenever they are ready.
Lessons for Adults
Whether you took music lessons as a child and forgot, or you never have read a note of music in your life, starting (or restarting) piano lessons as an adult can be extremely fulfilling. I will work closely with you to work towards your personal goals, and I will tailor your lessons to help you meet them. You will use a piano method designed for adults, and you will be amazed at how quickly you are reading music and playing basic tunes. Before long, you will be able to select specific songs or pieces that you would like to learn, even as we continue to work through the lessons in your book. Give it a shot!
